South Korea's all-time blockbuster "The Host" dominated prizes at the very first edition of the Asian Film Awards which took place March 20th in Hong Kong. The inaugural event aspires to be the Asian film industry's equivalent to the Oscars, recognizing achievement in 10 categories for films across Asia. It is held under the umbrella of the Hong Kong Entertainment Expo, which also includes the Hong Kong International Film Festival and Filmart.
Bong Joon-ho's "The Host" was awarded the event's first ever prize for Best Film. It also garnered the Best Actor award for Song Kang-ho playing a desperate father trying to get back his only daughter snatched by a chemically-spawned monster living in Seoul's Han River. SONG beat out fellow South Korean JUNG Ji-hoon, aka Rain, also nominated for his film debut in "I'm a Cyborg, but that's OK".
"The Host", in total, took four of the ten prizes, picking up nods for Best Cinematography by KIM Hyung-koo, and Best Visual Effects, courtesy of San Francisco-based The Orphanage. "The Host" opened on some 250 screens across China earlier in March, dominating the box office in its first two weeks and replacing Dasiy as the highest-grossing South Korean film released in China.
