Three Brothers leads KBS’s winning streak

KBS is on a hot streak — not only does it have several strong hit dramas currently on the air, it dominates every night of the week. KBS actually has more series bringing in 30% ratings than it does in the 20% range. At the head of the pack is the weekend family drama Three Brothers, which broke 40% with a 41.7% rating for its January 31 broadcast.


To put things into perspective, looking at the last week’s Top 20 overall ratings, KBS occupies the top four slots. The Top 20 includes non-drama offerings (variety shows and news, for instance), so if you consider only the drama and sitcom programming on the list, KBS has half of them.



Those four KBS dramas are Three Brothers in first place, fusion sageuk-action series Chuno in second (32.6%), daily drama Everybody Cha Cha Cha in third (32.3%), and high school drama God of Study in eighth (24.7%). That means that KBS can claim the top Monday-Tuesday drama, the top Wednesday-Thursday drama, the top weekend drama, and the top daily drama. Phew!


By comparison, SBS has three in the Top 20; its highest-rated is the weekend melodrama Loving You a Thousand Times in sixth place (26.6%), followed by weekend family-romance series Smile in fourteenth (18.2%), and the sunny Monday-Tuesday romantic comedy Wish Upon a Star in seventeenth place (16.9%). MBC has seventh-place sitcom High Kick Through the Roof (25.3%) and ninth-place Assorted Gems (23.8%).


I’ve said this many times before, but here it is again: Ratings aren’t necessarily indicative of artistic quality, but they ARE important to a drama’s production and certainly crucial to the broadcast station. MBC is struggling the most; it has had sporadic hits (Seon-deok, Queen of Housewives), but has struggled to put out consistently strong numbers. I might be more inclined to give them credit for their mania dramas, if only they didn’t treat them so poorly (Tamra, Strike Love).
