Female-Oct 11, 1979 ㅣ Actress
Bae Doo-na
Biography :
Bae was born in Seoul, South Korea on October 11, 1979. Growing up, she would follow her mother, Kim Hwa-young, a famous stage actress in Korea, around the theater and rehearsal halls, learning the lines of dialogue as she went along. This did not initially lead Bae towards acting, saying: "People might say that since my mother is a theater actor, I became an actress. But to me, those experiences probably had the opposite effect. On the contrary, because I saw many great actors working with my mother, I thought this was a job only people with extraordinary talent could do."

Bae attended Hanyang University until graduation in 1998. After leaving school, Bae was scouted by a model talent agency while walking in Seoul. This led to modeling clothing for COOLDOG's catalog, amongst others. In 1999 she made the switch to acting, debuting in the KBS TV drama School. Later the same year she appeared as Eun-suh in The Ring Virus, a Korean remake of the Japanese film Ring. Also in 1999, Bae won her first award, KBS's "Most Popular Actress" award.

In 2000, director Bong Joon-ho cast her as Hyeon-nam in the film Barking Dogs Never Bite, a critical success, for her willingness to do the part without makeup, something other South Korean Actresses were unwilling to do. She followed this with two more critical successes, 2001's Take Care of My Cat, directed by Jeong Jae-eun, and 2002's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, directed by Park Chan-wook.

2003 was less kind to Bae, as she saw both Tube and Spring Bears Love flop at the box office. After completing principal photography on Spring Bears Love, Bae decided to take time off from film, saying: "I never lived even once without having anything to do. The moment a film was presented to the press, I was almost always already shooting the next one ... I thought by myself: now my first cycle is really over. While I rest a little, I wanted to make a fresh new start."

In her time off, Bae took up photography, much of which can be seen between her official blog and her photo book. Bae finally stepped onto a theater stage in 2004, for a production of Sunday Seoul (not to be confused to the South Korean movie of the same title). The play was co-written by Park Chan-wook, whom she had previously worked with.

In 2005 Bae appeared in the Japanese film Linda Linda Linda, and in 2006 she worked with Bong Joon-ho again on The Host, currently the biggest grossing film in South Korean box office history.

BAE Doo-na in Koreeda film

Renowned Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda told reporters at Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) that he will work with actress BAE Doo-na on his next project. Koreeda said that he highly regards the Korean actress and that he is a fan. Koreeda watched all her films and named Barking Dogs Never Bite, Take Care of My Cat, and The Host. Koreeda praised BAE for her acting and comedy skills, rather than being just a pretty face, to motivate his choice for BAE in a leading role in his fantasy melodrama with touches of comedy. The story will be about a non-human form of life which learns the language and emotions like love while living among humans. Korean film company Barunson Entertainment is also involved in the project. According to Barunson, the project has no confirmed title as yet and that more details about the project are still pending. The film is scheduled to start filming in December. BAE previously played in the Japanese film Linda Linda Linda (Nobuhiro Yamashita), a film about a high school female band with BAE playing the lead singer. BAE has shunned roles of glamorous and/or beautiful protagonists and rather tackles character roles and she has the touch to endear characters with charming quirks. Koreeda showcased his latest film Still Walking at this year’s PIFF. He was also at PIFF with his previous film Hana in 2006. He is best known for his Nobody Knows.

Bae Doo Na, "Right now? I'm having the time of my life!"

Bae Doo Na,

The viewer bulletin board of the SBS drama series "How to meet a perfect neighbor" is overflowing with posts about Yoon Hee and Joon Suk's love line. The love between the CEO with a rich family and the ever so normal Yoon Hee and the obstacles that are placed along their path are the clicha of all melodramas, but their tears are keeping the viewers by their televisions. Amidst all of this, the transformation of Yoon Hee has been gathering attention. Until recently, she was a messy character all over the place, considered a 'thing' rather than a 'person' even from her mom. But through her struggles about love and relationships, she has been changing. It is a change that can, if done wrong, be blamed on the immaturity of the actor or crew. But nobody is criticizing her change and that is the power of Bae Doo Na who is playing the role. "Yoon Hee changed all of a sudden, didn't she? She changed a lot as the drama flowed towards the love line and I think that is the charm of Yoon Hee. She is not the type of person who takes in emotions one by one. She just falls in love at once like being hit by lightning. And the fact that she was always thirsty for love justifies such a change." Bae Doo Na on set on the 6th at the SBS studios had an expression of excitement while acting as Yoon Hee. Weaving in an out of movies and dramas by creating her own unique characters, she seemed to be enjoying having met a new character once again. "As the love story became the focus Yoon Hee started to be a lot more depressed but I'm having the time of my life acting her character. I feel like I am playing freely in front of the camera." Yoon Hee actually has a lot in common with Bae Doo Na. She finds joy in the smallest things and looks at things around her with a not so common eye. That is one of the supporting factors allowing her to publish two photo essays. "Yoon Hee is like endorphins. People around her may see her as a disorganized person and puzzle them in many cases, but she has a lot of affection and is very righteous many times. She overflows with charm. I personally like roles such as Yoon Hee that have their lacking points. Her best charm is that she is not typical. Can you tell on the television screen that I am having fun acting as Yoon Hee?" But having fun acting does not mean there are no hardships. Her eyes were infected a few days ago making it turn red, proof that her body is tired. And she is taking much care to make sure the change of Yoon Hee isn't too awkward. "If I receive the script and don't understand something, I ask the writer. And through the discussions I contemplate on how toa ct. When I can't explain the change of Yoon Hee logically, I have to interpret it the 'Bae Doo Na way' and make the viewers understand. That is the only way it is not hard for both me and the viewers. But that process isn't that easy. I have to bring out all of my imaginative power to justify Yoon Hee's emotional changes but finding that justification is difficult. And that is more so because her emotional changes aren't habitual but rather sudden and unique." Bae Doo Na's uniqueness can also be found in the reason she chose this series. It was solely because Kim Seung Woo who she performed with in the KBS series "Rosemary" offered. "I didn't know what type of drama or role it was. It wasn't important. Seung Woo suggested working on it together so I wanted to. Why? The most important thing is for me to enjoy it. I have to enjoy it and act comfortably so the viewers will also feel comfortable. Seung Woo is a senior I can trust and follow. His leadership on the set is great and he has a broad mindset." Starring in the movie "The Host" and the cable television drama series "Someday," she smiles and says, "The previous characters were rather reserved so I am glad I met Yoon Hee. I feel like I have been absorbing acting recently. I truly enjoy acting and work is so much fun."
